1. Run the setup.exe for Mental Ray Dir first and choose a
standard installation.
2. Don't worry about any licensing with SPM, Mental Ray is already
cracked when installed.
3. Now run the setup.exe in the 3DSMAX_MR_CONNEC dir for the
3D Studio MAX?Connection to mental?ray, and point it to the
relevant directories when asked. (NOTE: it should
find your MR 2.1.38.5 from step 1 directory automatically.

5. Thats it as far as installation is concerned.
6. Start 3D Studio Max and load one of the supplied sample scenes.
